I have always had a curious mind. I guess this is why I have such a creative mind. Since I was small, I have been asking questions and I’ve gotten a lot of good answers. There are, however, a few questions that have never been able to get the answer for. Such as…

How does aspirin know to go where the pain is?
How tall would a 1 ton cube of Styrofoam be?
Is a sewing machine a magical instrument? It has to be. How else to explain how a needle can just go in out, in out, in out, in out, in out and have our clothes stay together?
What makes Teflon stick to the pan?
Where do nightmares go during the day?
Is it smart to broadcast our existence to every extraterrestrial species out there? It’s only a matter of time before one of those species hears us, and we have a 50-50 chance of them being the good guys.

  1. It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. -Herman Melville

I digress, and it has me thinking about this road we are on toward Success. We should never stop asking questions for that is what fuels our minds. Without curiosity, we wouldn’t have the airplane, the computer, the telephone or Velcro.

J.R.R. Tolkien one time found himself with a hobbit in his hobbit hole. He didn’t know what to do with this hobbit, so he asked: What is this hobbit doing? The answer to this question resulted in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, surely the greatest work of fantasy ever written.

  2. The important thing is to not stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.-Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein once said the curiosity was more important than knowledge. He had a slight loathing for formal education, believing that it was the greatest detriment to curiosity there was. I happen to believe him. Today’s educational system does not believe in fostering curiosity or creativity. I’ll stop there before I climb on my soap box. Einstein also believed that the most wonderful thing we can experience was the Mysterious. The Mysterious fuels the mind with unending questions, and isn’t that the essence of life?
  3. We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.- Walt Disney

Always strive to be original in whatever you do. Nature hates imitation, and so does Google. In my experience, I found it fairly easy to put it original spin on things. All it takes is the courage to think about what you want to write about and the intelligence to put your own spin on it. Both the art of thinking and the art of intelligent writing can be learned.

So get out there and start questioning how things are. Don’t just assume that they’re there for a purpose. Find out what the purpose is. If you’re give in order to do something, set about to fill the order, but think it through. Don’t just fill the order like a robot. Take apart the order and discover everything about it. If a new rule becomes law, find out the origins of that ruling. Many of our laws still on the books were written 200 years ago, and don’t fit our technology or culture anymore.

The old saying that rules are meant to be broken is baloney. Rules are meant to be questioned, but not enough to get smacked in the head. Question your Reality around you. If you don’t understand it, learn about it. If you don’t like it, find out why you like. Don’t just assume that because your neighbor, your friend or even your spouse doesn’t like it, it means that it’s good, or that even should exist. If the rule stinks, find out enough about it so that you can fight to get a changed.

You have the right to question and be curious about anything you don’t understand. Not to question anything is to leave a life that is unfulfilled, unexciting and unsuccessful.
