For more than 200 years, people living in or passing through New Jersey’s Pinelands have reported seeing a large, noisy creature that has come to be known as the Jersey Devil. Some reports report that it flies. Many others report seeing a large hairy creature stalking the country roads late at night. There are hundreds of stories about the monster, and thousands of witnesses who claim they have encountered it, or at least heard it.
Last weekend, there was an “incident” that has made the television news across the country. Security guard Dave Black, of Little Egg Township, was driving home from his job in Atlantic City when he saw something on the side of the road. He saw what he thought was a llama moving in and out of the trees lining the road.
“I was just driving past the golf course in Galloway on Route 9 and had to shake my head a few times when I thought I saw a llama,” he later stated.
What happened next is the freaky part.
“If that wasn’t enough, then it spread out leathery wings and flew off over the golf course,” Dave said.
Was it the Jersey Devil?
Black grabbed his cell phone and took a few photos, but only one came out.

If that wasn’t enough, then it spread out leathery wings and flew off over the golf course. The creature quickly vanished, leaving Black wondering what he saw.

To make matters worse for this sighting, a video soon popped up, showing the same hilariously bad fake Jersey Devil “flying.” It shows the exact same creature moving past the same trees. The video was supposedly taken by Emily Martin while she was in Leeds Point, the fabled birthplace of the Jersey Devil. Here’s the video here. Try not to laugh.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXjUDCA2ovI
You can clearly see wings on the creature’s back and horns on its head. Its feet are cloven and the fur is dark brown. And it’s obviously off the ground. But the body is stiff and there appears to be no life to the thing. A Mannequin?
Have you ever seen the Jersey Devil? There are enough reports to form a composite of what the creature could look like. Reports are an oddly mixed lot. Some people say that the thing flies around, while others swear that it is a large hairy beast walking on foot. What’s going on here?
My take on the Jersey Devil is a bit controversial, but it does explain how the legends of a large hairy creature and reports a large flying creature can both be true. Hang on to your hats as we delve into the weird.
The only thing that the hairy creature and the flying creature have in common is their piercing vocalization. Over the centuries, people have mixed up two distinctly different creatures, mashing them together into the well known flying horse-like creature. That’s what’s in the video and the photo from last week.
That’s how I know they aren’t real. The real truth is that there are Bigfoot in New Jersey. There are also very large birds that visit the area, especially before and after large storm systems. Often called Thunderbirds, these birds hunt and eat the smaller birds driven into the air by the oncoming storm.
What these two creatures have in common are a distinct high-pitched cry. Both vocalizations sound so similar to each other that people have thought that they were the same creature. Fright and a fuzzy memory can do strange things to a paranormal report. Just take a look at all of the reports, and you will see that they fall into two categories, flyers and walkers.
It’s an easy mistake to make, and people in this century have begun to report sightings of these weird flying horse things. In my opinion, these people are just seeking publicity.
Do you believe in the legend? Let me know with a reply. What do you think everyone has been seeing all of these centuries, hmmmm?
