2 Passion Hacks That Keep Life From Overwhelming You

We’ve all heard the concept of following your passions. YouTube is riddled with videos about following your passions to make things work. But suppose they have it backwards?

Suppose that instead of following your passions, you should first actually try to find something to become passionate about? If you think about it, doesn’t that make more sense?

All of that energy involved in creating and channeling and focusing your passion should be done in coordination with that purpose. So it makes sense to find something to be passionate about before you can be passionate in the first place.

There are books everywhere that tell you that following your passions is the best way to achieve your dreams. While I don’t disagree with that, but too many people don’t have dreams begin with. They get all crazy about some idea that they need to be passionate and they go running off.

You don’t have to do that. Take some time to sit down and write down things you are interested in, not passionate about. Passion will come later. In fact, as you’re making a list, something will stand up and say that you that this is what you are passionate about. It always happens, and it’s a good thing. Otherwise, you’d be dead.

  1. Feed Your Passions, Don’t Overstuff Them

Isolate your interests down to one or two things that you really, really like. Let’s take Baseball and Movies, for instance. These are two great interests of mine, but I’m only passionate about one of them. I used to live, eat, drink, and sleep baseball, but not anymore.

Baseball has changed so much since I was a kid, that’s very difficult to really love it anymore. It continues to mutate, whether we as fans like it or not. The specter of both leagues using the designated hitter rule is the stuff of nightmares.

Movies, on the other hand, are something that is still in my blood. Even though they are designed, like sports, to be a major distraction for what we truly should be pursuing, I still love them.

This is something that I am still passionate about. Movies, like baseball, are chock-full of statistics and lists of accomplishments of the people who participate in them. Movies are the great art form of the 20th century. They have dominated society and culture in ways that no other art form has ever done, aside from Music.

My passion for movies has been tempered down slightly over the past few years. When I was in my teens, I would routinely watch 2 to 3 movies a day. That is true passion.

  2. Selective Passion

Today, however, I am more selective about what I watch. They’re also just isn’t the time to watch as many things as I used to watch because I’m also building my business and writing my Epic Fantasy novels. They are more important than movies.

Still, it is possible to get so passionate about something that overwhelms everything else about you. It can become your life. Just ask any ardent surfer, or jogger or fitness enthusiast about how their sports can cause them to be so focused that everything revolves around it. Sometimes, to their detriment.

My advice is to be very careful about your passions. While they are an excellent thing to focus on when striving for your goals, you need to be careful that it doesn’t become the focus of your goals while you neglect of your true goals.
