It’s Anything Goes Thursday, and today we’ll talk about the Amazing Mets in 2015. As I begin this post, the New York Mets are behind in the third inning of game Five of the National League Division Series. I started writing this post on Thursday night, while the game is progressing. At the moment, the score is 2 to 1, Dodgers. Jacob De Grom did not have his stuff tonight and is not sharp, allowing two baserunners in each of the first three innings. But the Mets have a history of coming back from behind during the worst circumstances…
It’s October 25, 1986. The bottom of the 10th inning. The Red Sox had been winning up until this point. The first 2 Mets had made outs. The champagne was on ice and was being wheeled into the Red Sox locker room. Three straight hits by the Mets tied the game at 5-5. Ray Knight made it to third base during the confusion on the previous play. That brought up Mookie Wilson. 10 pitches later, Wilson tapped the ball to first baseman Bill Buckner. Buckner, with two bad knees, could not field the ball and allowed it to trickle between his legs. Mookie Wilson got a single, and Ray Knight scored the winning run.
We all know now what happened in game Seven. The Boston Red Sox were done. Their morale was at zero. The champagne was wheeled into the Mets locker room early in the game. The Red Sox had no chance to win the game and the series, and they knew it.
Back to tonight’s game. Daniel Murphy walks. Michael Duda also walks, but Murphy sees that all of the infielders are between first and second base. So Murphy steals third, and scores tying run on a sacrifice fly by the next batter.
In 1969, the Mets played a heartbreaking World Series. It was my first year as a baseball fan. I had found a favorite team, the Baltimore Orioles. Living in New Jersey, I have also watched how the Mets went from a last-place team to a virtual miracle team, easily becoming the National League champions. There was something special about the Mets that year, and I knew it deep inside.
I wanted the Orioles to win, and they won the first game handily. But after the second game, I knew inside that the Mets were going to win the entire World Series. And they did. I am still an Orioles fan, in spite of everything.
By the Way, Daniel Murphy’s stolen base in the fifth inning they just have been the straw that went too far. In the sixth inning, Murphy hit a home run to make it a 3-2 game. I decided to stay up past my normal bedtime to watch the end of the game.
I believe in patterns in life. So far, the New York Mets have won their first and third World Series. They have lost their second and fourth World Series. By that pattern, the New York Mets will win the next World Series. Perhaps this is the year. Or next year.
The Mets have won the game and the National League division series. They’re moving on to face the Chicago Cubs. One of these teams will become the National League champions, going up against either the Toronto Blue Jays or the Texas Rangers. I’m a big baseball fan, so whoever is in the World Series, I’ll be happy. I will be happiest, however, if the New York Mets are also in the World Series.
