Ivan T. Sanderson was perhaps the first real Cryptozoologist. He ws more than that, however. he was a world famous naturalist, explorer and biologist. At the height of his fame, he developed a passion for creatures and anomalies not recognized by Science.
Oopart is a term created by cryptozoologist Ivan T. Sanderson to label the odd items that have been found over the years in places where they shouldn’t be. Oopart stands for Out Of Place Artifact. Some of these items exhibit technology centuries before they were invented. These objects could be historical, archaeological, or paleontological in nature, such as the 14th century painting showing a child holding a toy helicopter. That’s a real example by the way.
Here are some ooparts that I have found to be particularly perplexing.
The Antikythera mechanism was found off the coast of Greece in 1900. Modern analysis has reconstructed it, and discovered that it was a very sophisticated astronomical device. It shows every planet in the Solar System, including , and their orbits.
The Dorchester Pot. In 1852, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, a small pot was found in the rubble after an explosion was set off in a coal mine. The coal vein is estimated to be close to 600 million years old. The chunk of coal where it had been in still had the impression of the pot. Is this evidence of the existence of creative metal workers in North America over 600 million years ago?
The Aluminum Wedge of Aiud. This is a wedge-shaped object found two kilometers east of Aiud, Romania, on the banks of the Mures River in 1974. It was discovered 35 feet under sand while digging a well. It was found alongside two mastodon bones, making the wedge at least 11,000 years old. Aluminum is very difficult to extract from the earth and requires temperatures of thousands of degrees to melt and forge. The technology for creating aluminum was not discovered until the 1880’s. How could the low tech primitives of 11,000 years ago make something out of aluminum?
The Piri Reis Map dates from the late 15th century. Its origins are a mystery. The story has it that it was copied from much older maps. Either way, what it shows was not known, even in the 15th century. The interior of North and South America are shown, complete with the Appalachian and Andes mountain chains. But the biggest revelation is that it shows Antarctic almost as it exists today. The difference in topography is that the map has Antarctica ice free. There are two mountain ranges shown, and several valleys. These were not discovered until the 1960’s. How did this map show Antarctica without ice, when the last time it had no ice was nearly half a million years ago?
