Wednesday is Movie Review Day. I’ll highlight and review a film and its relevance to Success and other related principles.
In the spring of 1943, in Stalag Luft III in Sagan (now Żagań, Poland), in the province of Lower Silesia, Nazi Germany, a plan is being hatched. Led by RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett, over 1000 POWs will take part in an elaborate plan to breakout 250 prisoners in a single night. Bartlett is known as “Big X” for his skills in organizing escapes from Nazi prison camps. This time, Bartlett plans an escape so audacious that everyone around him considers it impossible. They carry out the escape anyway.
This is the setup for The Great Escape, from United Artists in 1963. This is an incredible World War II film, all the more incredible because it’s based on a true story. Roger Bartlett and his group of a dozen escape experts meticulously plan every detail of this escape.

Goal Setting with The Great Escape
Bartlett and his group form a Master Mind, and the combination of all these creative minds produces a single mind dedicated to a single thing, the organized escape of 250 prisoners. Together, this Master Mind comes up with ideas and solutions that none of these men would have been able to come up with on their own.
Soon the entire POW population is taking on a single goal. Each step moves them forward. There are failures along the way. Their main tunnel is discovered on July 4th. One of their tunnel experts is killed after being captured following his unsuccessful escape attempt on his own.
None of these things stop Bartlett and his men. They remain undaunted in their tasks. On the appointed night, over 75 men escape. The escape is discovered by guards, and this cuts short of their goal. Nonetheless, the 75 men play havoc with the Nazis in the area around the prison camp. The remainder of the film highlights the efforts of these brave men to disrupt the Nazis within their own country, all the while doing their best to escape it to Allied territory.
The Great Escape is one of the greatest movies ever made. For action, suspense and an amazing ensemble of actors at their height, it’s never been equaled. The incredible cast of The Great Escape includes James Garner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Donald Pleasance and Richard Attenborough, who by the way, played John Hammond in Jurassic Park.
