With the MST3K Kickstarter approaching $4 million, I thought it was time to show off just how truly funny this show is. For 197 episodes, we were treated each week to an often terrible film made funny by the comments of either Joel Robinson or Mike Nelson and their Robot Pals. Here are some of their best.
BEGINNING OF THE END
Beginning of the End is a 1957 science fiction film directed by Bert I. Gordon, starring Peter Graves and Peggie Castle. An agricultural scientist (Graves) has successfully grown mammoth vegetables using radiation. Unfortunately, the vegetables are also eaten by locusts which, you guessed it, increase in size to gigantic matte shot locusts and attack the city of Chicago. Or at least that’s the idea. Poor matte work and locusts actually crawling across a photo of a skyscraper make for some very funny moments. Director Gordon didn’t let less than special effects get in the way of making movies, and for that I’m grateful. Watch as a very hilly California fills in for the very flat state of Illinois.

THE CREEPING TERROR
My vote for the best episode that MST3K ever did. A spaceship lands in the woods, and a huge expulsion of carpet remnants is spit out. Moving at about ½ mile an hour, this creature has hypnotic powers. People who encounter it simply sit there as it swallows them whole. The local sheriff and a squad of inept soldiers roam around aimlessly while this creature wanders about in broad daylight. The films is notable for its lack of actual real dialogue, as the audio footage was destroyed on the way to the processing lab. This 1964 ultra-cheapie is a real laugh riot.

Bert I. Gordon strikes again in this tale of a murderer who is haunted by the ghost of, Vi, the woman he killed. Joel and the bots have a great time tormenting the killer, as he sees Vi everywhere. The things they make the little girl say will make your stomach hurt from laughing. From 1961, this one is a winner for laughs hands down.

THE GIANT GILA MONSTER
THE GIANT GILA MONSTER, from 1959, has an unusual monster. The gila monster is never on the screen with any of the humans. A weird flick made even stranger with the comments by Joel and the bots. Were teenagers ever this neat and clean? “I Sing Whenever I Sing” will haunt you forever.

IT CONQUERED THE WORLD
I had to throw in a Roger Corman film to make this a cracking good collection. This 1957 dandy stars Peter Graves, long before he was on Mission Impossible. This is actually one of the better SF films he made, but it’s still a cheap and silly film. Too much talk and not enough thrills. That’s where Joel and the bots come in. they turn this into one of the best early shows.
